Gable group mourning GWTW star Fred Crane

By AMY GAREIS News-Herald Staff Writer

Fred CraneThe Clark Gable Foundation in Cadiz is mourning the loss of one of its greatest supporters, an original cast member of "Gone With The Wind."

Fred Crane, who portrayed one of the lovestruck Tarleton twins vying for the affections of Scarlett O'Hara in the 1939 film, died Aug. 21 at age 90 in Barnesville, Ga. Windies may recall Crane or even met him at prior Gable celebrations.

Nan Mattern, the foundation's executive director, recalled him fondly. "When he was here, he was such a big draw with the crowds. He was an entertainer and will really be missed. We'd like to extend our, sympathy to the family."

Born in New Orleans in 1918; Crane attended Tulane and Loyola universities and honed his acting skills in the local theater. With a few bucks and a one-way ticket to California, he made his way towards film around 1938. He became part of the Clark Gable-Vivien Leigh film after a relative's daughter, Evelyn Keyes, was cast as Scarlett's sister, Suellen. When a casting director got wind of Crane's Southern accent, he tested with Leigh and earned the role of Brent Tarleton. He won a 13-week contract and is best known for speaking the first words in the Civil War epic.

Crane continued his career on television, radio and the stage. According to published reports, he was an announcer at the classical-music radio station KFAC in Los Angeles until it was sold and the format changed. Other accomplishments included being a talent instructor and operating the Tarleton Oaks Bed & Breakfast outside Atlanta with his wife, Terry, until 2007.

Crane had been hospitalized for several weeks prior to his death with complications from diabetes. He was the oldest surviving adult cast member of the classic movie.
